Teeth Whitening

We hope the information in this article will help you make an informed decision regarding whitening your teeth. Most of the information you see on the internet, or in print, is really advertising to try to get you to use a particular product or service. Some may sound very easy or may be very low in cost, but  these are also not likely to give you the results you want. If your teeth are pretty white, and you just want to whiten them a little more, almost any of the products or services available will work. But if you think your teeth are much darker than you would like, and you want to really whiten them, then you have to "do it right" or it won't work.

There are two basic ways of doing teeth whitening. One is having it done in an office by a dental professional, and is usually referred to as "chairside whitening". The other is doing it yourself, at home, using products you purchase yourself (over-the-counter), or that are supplied to you by a dental professional (prescription). We call this "take-home whitening". Our office offers both chairside and take-home whitening. Generally we prefer the take-home whitening, and if you read further you will understand why.

Take-home whitening can be done using custom trays, or using pre-fabricated trays, or plastic strips, that you press and form onto your teeth. Any whitening product that you just brush or "paint" onto your teeth, without some kind of device to keep it from rinsing away, is going to take many, many applications to have any kind of whitening effect. Custom trays are made using molds of your teeth so that they fit precisely in order to keep the whitening product in contact with the teeth. We feel they are the easiest and most effective method for doing take-home whitening.

All teeth whitening products contain a similar bleaching ingredient which does the whitening. In order to whiten effectively the whitening product must be strong enough, and remain on the teeth for a long enough time, to get the job done. Over-the-counter whitening products contain a lower concentration of the bleaching ingredient  than the prescription whitening products.

The fancy lights or "lasers" used for chairside whitening procedures in some offices do not have much of an effect on the degree of whitening that occurs. The whitening is caused by the whitening product, not by the light. The light heats up the whitening product slightly, but it would work just about as well without the light.

When you have chairside whitening done a very strong whitening product is used. Great care must be taken to prevent this gel from getting on anything other than the teeth. Your mouth must stay open with protective devices in place for the entire treatment time. This is difficult for some people, and sometimes the session must be ended before the recommended amount of treatment time.  In these cases the teeth will probably not get whitened as much as expected. Even when the session is completed the degree of whitening may be less than desired and additional sessions are necessary to get teeth whiter.

When you do take-home whitening there is no limit to the number of treatments you can do. You may repeat the treatments until your teeth have the degree of whiteness you desire. Of course, if you use custom-made trays and prescription whitening products many fewer sessions will be needed to complete the whitening process than if you use over-the-counter products. Our basic fee  includes enough whitening product to complete the typical treatment process, with enough product left over for future touch-ups.

Teeth that are very dark can be made very white with the correct treatment. In some cases extra-strong prescription whitening products and special types of custom-made trays may need to be used.
